Secondary Air Injection System Insufficient Flow (Bank 2)
P0492 is one of those Audi-specific issues that doesn’t usually affect how the car drives, but it’s a huge headache when it comes to emissions and long-term maintenance. This code means the secondary air injection (SAI) system isn’t flowing enough air into Bank 2 during cold starts. I’ve seen this countless times on 3.0L and 3.2L engines — especially in the 2009–2016 range — and it almost always comes down to carbon buildup inside the cylinder head.
What makes this problem tricky is that everything can seem fine from the outside. The pump may run, the valves may click, but internally the airflow passages are restricted. Over time, carbon deposits block those tiny air channels, and once that happens, the system simply can’t do its job. You’ll keep getting the code no matter how many parts you replace unless the root cause is addressed.
From experience, most drivers don’t notice anything serious besides the check engine light. The biggest clue is how the car behaves right after a cold start — it may idle a little rough or feel slightly off for the first minute, then smooth out completely.
That’s because the SAI system only operates during cold starts. Once the engine warms up, the system shuts off, which is why this issue can go unnoticed for a long time until emissions testing comes into play.
By far the most common cause is carbon buildup. I’ve personally seen engines where the ports are almost completely blocked — no amount of new parts will fix it until those passages are cleaned. This is why many people replace pumps or valves and still see the code come back.
Combi valves are another common failure point. If they stick closed or don’t receive proper vacuum, air never reaches the engine. Vacuum line cracks are also common, especially on older Audi engines where heat causes rubber to deteriorate over time.
The air pump itself can fail, but it’s less common than people think. Always verify operation before replacing it — I’ve seen many unnecessary pump replacements when the real issue was carbon blockage.
The real fix — in most cases — is cleaning the carbon buildup. This isn’t a simple spray-and-go job. It usually requires removing components and using specialized tools or chemicals to clear the blocked air passages. Audi even released a technical service bulletin (TSB 2033001) specifically for this issue.
If the ports are clear, then move on to testing the combi valves and pump. Always verify airflow and vacuum operation before replacing parts. Proper diagnosis here can save hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.
If you’re seeing both P0491 and P0492 together, there’s a very high chance carbon buildup is the root cause. I’ve seen many cases where people replaced the pump, valves, and sensors — only to find the ports were completely clogged.
Also, check with a dealership before paying out of pocket. Some Audi models had extended warranty coverage for this issue due to how common it is. It’s worth verifying before committing to a costly repair.
